Nick Saban: Leadership Must Be Maintained

MOBILE | University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban told reporters on Thursday that leadership is not something you can just demand.

“I think it is something you get by impacting other people with the example that you set and being somebody that somebody (else) wants to emulate,” Saban explained. “We have leadership seminars and leadership groups that are constantly trying to educate and enhance guys to be good leaders.

“I think we do have some good leaders on our team, but I think the key to being successful is to have great leadership on your team. It takes a lot of maturity and a lot of players who are interested in the welfare of the team and are willing to try to influence and inspire other players on the team to help everybody do what they need to do in terms of their role to be responsible and accountable to do their job.”

Saban was taking part in the annual Nick’s Kids golf tournament at the Country Club of Mobile.

“I enjoy playing golf but there is not a lot of time to play,” Saban said. “I think this thing we do today is not really about the golf, it’s about helping people and we certainly appreciate all of the people who contribute to Nick’s Kids who make the team what it is. We are able to help a lot of people because of it.”

After first rebuilding the Crimson Tide back into a national contender, Saban talked about the changing challenges of maintaining the program at a high level.
